There’s no questioning that the UK is in an energy crisis. 2024’s Research shows an estimated 13% of households (3.17 million) are in ‘fuel poverty.’ It’s a scary number and people are battling these rising energy prices from any real estate they’re investing in: home rentals, office space, brick-and-mortar stores—price tags are rising to keep things afloat.
Fuel poverty is pushing more and more real estate companies to look for alternative, more sustainable ways to fund their business and keep their customers happy. TITAN Containers has done exactly that. TITAN successfully installed solar panel systems at the storage facility in Kolding, Denmark—a sign of what’s possible in similar climate countries.
This installation sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the storage industry and demonstrates TITAN’s commitment to providing contemporary, innovative solutions to customers across the globe.
With 28+ self-storage sites across the UK, this is a huge step forward in operations for TITAN. We can now understand what it takes to be able to run an entirely solar-dependent storage site. This first site will help the team implement solar solutions quicker, more efficiently, and more effectively across the UK, and beyond.
WHERE IT ALL STARED: THE RISE OF SOLAR POWER FOR TITAN IN DENMARK
Back in 2021, the team at TITAN set a mission: to create the first 100% solar-powered self-storage container depot in Denmark.
It was a huge undertaking—especially considering the amount of space needed to get enough of these panels to soak up the Danish sun. Thankfully, space is not something we’re short on, even if Denmark may be low on sunshine from time to time.
In September 2022, the team received the keys to the storage depot in Kolding, in southern Denmark. The depot was in dire need of some TLC, but the foundations and space were enough to know we’d made the right decision.
After a couple of months of hard work, patience, and happy humans, we transformed the previously neglected storage site into a space that combines utility with sustainability—and we couldn’t be prouder.
A TOUR OF YOUR FIRST SOLAR-POWERED STORAGE SITE IN KOLDING, DENMARK
The Kolding facility has a whopping 17,000 square metres of storage space. The indoor storage hall spans across an impressive 1,800 square metres: 57 rooms were already installed when we got the keys, and we’re planning to build around 60 more to cope with Kolding’s demand.
There’s also a 260 square metre workshop for container repairs and other on-site services.
The outdoor self-storage area covers 4,500 square metres, providing ample space for storage, and those all-important solar panels.
Here’s an overview:
85KWH SOLAR-POWERED ROOF IS KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON
By replacing the old roof, TITAN created a platform capable of generating clean, renewable energy to power the 1,800m2 indoor hall. We’ve also added a 10kWh battery to ensure a continuous energy supply for CCTV, lighting, and other vital functions throughout the night as all of our storage sites are accessible 24/7 thanks to an electric gate system connected to customers’ smartphones.
This change not only decreases our carbon footprint but reduces energy costs, benefitting our customers and the environment at the same time. It’s a long-term win-win.
An electric fleet to keep things moving
We’re not stopping at solar. The Kolding depot also offers two electric cars to help with the day-to-day, an electric side-loader truck, and two electric forklifts. All of these vehicles are helping to keep TITAN’s storage solutions as green, sustainable, and affordable as possible.
INTELLIGENT LIGHTING FOR ROUND-THE-CLOCK SOLUTIONS
The team has also incorporated smart lights throughout the office space. These lights have advanced sensors that adapt to the natural lighting available and only output the light needed for people to see comfortably.
For example, as daylight diminishes the sensors gradually increase the brightness to ensure a well-lit environment while keeping energy output at its most optimal. When the natural light is stronger the sensors dim the artificial lighting. Much like a smartphone’s screen adapts to the light from its surroundings to give you the best screen brightness at all times.
Plus, the indoor hall has now been divided into six zones, each equipped with motion sensor-controlled lamps. This dynamic setup allows customers to navigate through the self-storage effortlessly, at any time of day, and without the need to switch the lights on or off manually—which can be a tricky task when you’ve got your hands full or are new to the space!
