What is the average lifespan of a 20ft container?

A 20ft shipping container has a typical service life of 20 to 30 years when used at sea, then 10 to 20 years of further use on land. Most containers retire at around 25 years of total service. The steel walls hold up for decades. The floor and door seals are the parts that wear first.

Did you know?
Many 20ft containers spend longer as storage units than they ever spend carrying cargo. A container that retires from international shipping may still have decades of useful service left on land.
