How wide are shipping containers?

All standard ISO shipping containers are 8ft (2.44 m) wide externally. Internal width is 2.35 m. This is consistent across all container types and sizes — 10ft, 20ft, 40ft, and High Cube. The width does not vary because the global handling system (cranes, ships, trucks) is built around this single dimension.

Did you know?
Container widths were standardised so equipment around the world could handle them. Changing the width would require changes to ships, trucks, rail wagons and lifting systems.
