What is the main difference between a 20ft and a 40ft container?
A 20ft container is half the length of a 40ft, but both are 8ft wide and 8ft 6in tall (standard) or 9ft 6in tall (High Cube). The 20ft holds 33 cubic meters of cargo. The 40ft holds 67 cubic meters. The 40ft is more cost-effective per cubic meter to ship and rent.

A 20ft container usually reaches legal road-weight limits before it runs out of space. A 40ft container often reaches its volume limit first. That is why dense cargo tends to favour 20ft units, while lighter cargo often moves in 40ft containers.
