What are open top containers used for?
Open top containers are used for cargo too tall for a standard container or that needs top-loading by crane. Examples include machinery, glass panels, timber, scrap metal, and large building materials. A removable tarpaulin or hard top covers the open roof during transport. The walls and floor match a standard container in strength.

Open top containers are often chosen because the cargo cannot fit through standard doors. Some loads fit inside the container perfectly but are simply too tall to enter through the front opening.
